Temperature: High 18 degrees<\/p>\n<p>Today was going to be a long day if I was to be back on schedule after the detour to Saint Quentin and reach Tergn\u00ecer. I decided to make my way to S\u00e8raucourt le Grand &#8211; my original destination for yesterday &#8211; and pick up the Lightfoot track.<\/p>\n<p>It had rained through the night and was still raining when I left after breakfast. I found my way out of the city<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-380\" src=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180612_081749-1548x2064-1536x2048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180612_081749-1548x2064-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180612_081749-1548x2064-375x500.jpg 375w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180612_081749-1548x2064-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180612_081749-1548x2064.jpg 1548w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I walked through the pleasant city suburbs of Gauchy and Grugies to reach Contescourt.<\/p>\n<p>Contescourt was immaculate with closely mown wide grass verges with giant lavender filled flower pots. There is a British and Commonwealth Military cemetery here where 1560 soldiers are buried many of them unknown &#8211; it is incredibly sad to walk amongst the gravestones and to see so many young lives lost and with many of the inscriptions on the headstones bearing no name and just the words &#8221; A Soldier is buried here&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-376\" src=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_092938-2656x1494-2048x1152.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_092938-2656x1494-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_092938-2656x1494-500x281.jpg 500w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_092938-2656x1494-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I sat for a while in a small chapel &#8211; to feel the peace and tranquillity that filled this last resting place and to pray &#8211; it was very moving.<\/p>\n<p>Now on track again I moved on to Clastres mainly following off-road tracks<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-377\" src=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_101543-1494x2656-1152x2048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1422\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_101543-1494x2656-1152x2048.jpg 1152w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_101543-1494x2656-281x500.jpg 281w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_101543-1494x2656-768x1365.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pilgrimsway.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_20180612_101543-1494x2656.jpg 1494w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>I was looking for somewhere to rest, eat and tend to an issue with my left small toe. I eventually found a farm accommodation bridge above a rail track that was reasonably dry. The towpath is well kept and the grass verges were being cut as I passed. I met and chatted with one of the lock keepers. It was a lovely walk as I passed men fishing and the occasional walker.
