Day 50 Quart to Estaod – 20th July

Distance: 26.3 km – Elevation +500 m -460 m

Weather: Sunny. Temperature: High 26 degrees

In finding accommodation last night we had to leave the Via Francigena. So this morning before we left Quart just before 7.00 am I had used Google maps to set a route to Nus where we could join the Via Francigena again. Jean Pierre was a little anxious about Google maps and I don’t think he was settled until we reached Nus and the Via Francigena waymarks. It was warm and humid as we climbed out of Quart but the views back along the Aosta Valley were again spectacular. We passed through the small community of Nus to reach Verrayes where the parish church of Diemoz, the Church of San Martino, and Santa Lucia with its paintings by the Ivrean artist Giussepe Stornone Chambave was unfortunately closed. Later just before midday on the outskirts of Chambave, we found a small restaurant open,  the Ristorante la Crotta. Also eating at the restaurant we met another pilgrim walking to Jerusalem, Margaret had started out from her home in Holland. After lunch, we walked into Chambave where a local resident called out to us to tell us we were going in the wrong direction. We visited the Chiesa parrocchiale di Chambave where outside there is a silhouette pilgrim sculpture and prayer dropbox. There was a lot of climbing and it was tough walking as we passed through the communities of Pontey, and Saint-Denis. The views of Castello di Ussel with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains including Mont Crabun, and Corno del Lago, were wonderful as the path passed above Chatillon. We passed little houses nestled in the hillside below us as we continued to our destination for the night. Jean Pierre had found a small guest house and it was around 5.00 pm when we arrived in Estaod at the end of a long hot tiring day of close to 27 kilometres.
