Day 91 Campagnano Di Roma to La Storta – 30th August

Distance: 25.2 km – Elevation +380 m -500 m

Weather: Sunny. Temperature: High 30 degrees

I slept well and was not disturbed by the festivities last night and I was away from the apartment at 7.30 am and as I was walking out of the awakening village I saw a barber opening his shop. I had not shaved for close to 3 weeks and the resultant beard was beginning to annoy me and also knowing this was the penultimate day of my pilgrimage I decided for the first time on this Italian section of my pilgrimage to visit the barber for a haircut and a shave. Wow, what a difference, I felt like a new me and walked out of the village with new energy. There was a climb out of the village before a descent to the Santuario Madonna del Sorbo where I visited its 15th-century church. After the Santurio the path crosses the Sorbo Valley and reaches the historic center of Formello, and from there into a rural landscape. It was well signed with regular markers reminding me of the distance left to walk to Rome – Roma KM 33 and Roma KM 27.3. I met and passed Margaret and Thirsa close to where the ancient Etruscan city Veio stood. I arrived in La Storta at 3.00 pm but still had 3 kilometres to walk to my hotel. The walk to the hotel was along the busy Via Cassia before a smaller road took me into a quiet suburb where the hotel was located. In the evening the only option was to dine within the hotel and when I entered the bar for a pre-dinner drink I surprisingly and unexpectedly saw Tim and Paul who had also booked into the hotel. So a really enjoyable evening talking about our respective pilgrimages and our expectations for our final day tomorrow.
